Steve Hencher has been involved in the design, construction and supervision of many tunnels and caverns both using drill and blast methods as well as TBMs and has advised in legal cases re tunnel problems including collapse and difficulties during construction. The case study at Glendoe was largely written in 2018, to address aspects of tunnelling contracts and the outcomes of legal action.
There is an extensive section dicussing the assessment of geological hazards and managing risks for tunnels in the text book Practical Engineering Geology (2012). Part of that derives from work done by colleagues in Halcrow particularly for the Young Dong Mountain Loop Tunnel in Korea and the Channel tunnel Rail link to London.
